What is this Project?
The Oxfordshire Design Partnership is an exciting and innovative
project being carried out jointly by Oxfordshire County Council
and the five district councils that make up the county of Oxfordshire.
Its purpose is to stimulate a high standard of design for the development
of all new buildings and spaces in the county and thus add to the
quality of life of everyone living, visiting or working in the county.
The development of this Partnership approach is being supported
by the Commission for Architecture in the Built Environment (CABE)
who have appointed a team from the University of the West of England(UWE)
to support its development.
The first stage of the project is mainly investigative. It involves
gathering information about the progress already made in the county
in achieving good design and about the planning and development
processes already in existence. The research will reveal the impediments
that prevent progress and the techniques that have been used successfully
to achieve design triumphs. It will also seek the ideas of the members
and officers of the councils and the public for projects that might
be carried out as a second stage of the Partnership programme.
The Oxfordshire Design partnership is a pilot project. It is the
first project of its kind in the country. If it is successful in
establishing a culture in the county where achieving high quality
design is always a core value and commitment of the authorities
in the county this will be a great achievement. CABE hope that the
county and district Councils throughout England will be able to
learn from the experience.
